Tips for Recovering from Liposuction

liposuction
If you have reached a weight that you are happy with but are frustrated by areas of stubborn fat no matter how much you diet or exercise, liposuction could be the answer to your problems.

Here are our top tips for recovering from your liposuction procedure.

Stay hydrated after liposuction surgery

Most people know that water is vital for us to stay healthy, but it is especially important when your body is trying to heal, even after an elective surgery. Drinking plenty of fresh water will help to minimize swelling and prevent dehydration. It will also help flush any toxins out of your body and help your head feel clearer.

Wear your compression garment as directed

Your compression garment is doing a vitally important job in supporting your healing process. Wearing a compression garment has been shown to reduce pain and swelling, aid drainage and guide your body back into the shape it should be. Your surgical team will tell you exactly how long you should be wearing your compression garment for, and for the best results and fastest possible healing after your surgery, you should follow their advice exactly as directed.

Take your medication on time, every time

You will almost certainly be prescribed some medications after your procedure, and these are usually a form of pain relief that will help keep you comfortable. While many people try and hold off on taking their medication until they can’t bear the discomfort any longer, this can lead to you being in unnecessary pain which can actually have a detrimental effect on your healing process. Therefore, we strongly recommend that you take the drugs prescribed according to the instructions you are given. You should also avoid drugs containing blood thinners such as aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatories as these can increased swelling and bleeding.

Don’t drink or smoke

Smoking has been shown to have a significant slowing effect on the healing process, and consuming alcohol is also not recommended. You may also want to limit your caffeine intake, as some studies show that this could delay your recovery.

Stay active

It may be the last thing that you feel like doing but staying active during your recovery period will ensure that your muscles retain their strength and that oxygenated blood circulates well throughout your body. This will help prevent blood clots from forming and will support the healing process, even speeding up your rate of recovery.

Schedule a lymphatic massage

After any surgery, the lymph nodes can fill with fluid and bacteria which creates swelling and pain. However, by going for regular lymphatic massages you can help reduce these symptoms and flush out any toxins from your body, keeping your immune system in tip-top condition. Most cosmetic surgeons will recommend that you consider a lymphatic massage around once a week following liposuction surgery.

You will be given very specific instructions to follow after your liposuction, and you should ensure that you adhere to the advice provided by our surgeon and surgical team. If you have any further questions about your surgery, call our office today at 214-892-2474.
