Blepharoplasty Recovery: Tips to Reduce Swelling & Bruising

What To Expect After Blepharoplasty
Blepharoplasty recovery looks a little different for every patient, but swelling, bruising, tightness, and mild discomfort are all common in the first several days. Whether you are having upper eyelid surgery, lower eyelid surgery, or both, your body needs time to heal as the delicate tissues around the eyes settle.
At our Dallas plastic surgery practice, we give each patient detailed aftercare instructions based on their procedure, anatomy, and healing needs.
Keep Your Head Elevated
One of the simplest ways to reduce swelling after blepharoplasty is to keep your head elevated, especially during the first week. Sleeping on your back with your head raised can help limit fluid buildup around the eyes.
Try using extra pillows or a wedge pillow to stay comfortably elevated at night. Avoid sleeping on your side or stomach until we let you know it is safe, since pressure around the eyes can affect healing.
Use Cold Compresses As Directed
Cold compresses can help reduce bruising and swelling during the early stage of blepharoplasty recovery. We may recommend applying them gently around the eyes for short periods at a time.
Be careful not to place ice directly on the skin or press too firmly. The eyelid area is sensitive after surgery, and gentle care is important for comfortable healing.
Avoid Strain During Early Healing
Your body heals best when it is not under extra stress. In the first several days after eyelid surgery, it is important to avoid activities that increase pressure around the face and eyes.
During early recovery, we may ask you to avoid:
- Heavy lifting or strenuous exercise
- Bending over for long periods
- Rubbing or touching your eyes
- Wearing eye makeup too soon
- Smoking or drinking alcohol during recovery
- Skipping prescribed medications or aftercare steps
Following these guidelines can help support smoother healing and reduce the risk of prolonged swelling or irritation.
Protect Your Eyes From Sun And Wind
Your eyes may feel more sensitive during blepharoplasty recovery. Sun exposure, wind, dust, and dry air can make the area feel irritated while your eyelids are healing.
When you go outside, wear dark sunglasses and a hat for added protection. This can also help protect healing incisions from sun exposure, which is important for minimizing visible scarring over time.
Be Patient With Bruising And Swelling
Most patients notice significant improvement within the first couple of weeks, but subtle swelling can take longer to fully resolve. Bruising often changes color as it fades, which is a normal part of the healing process.
It is important not to judge your final results too early. As swelling decreases, the eyes typically look more refreshed, open, and natural. We will monitor your healing during follow-up visits and let you know what to expect at each stage.
Follow Your Surgeon’s Instructions Closely
The best blepharoplasty recovery tips are the ones tailored to your specific surgery. We will explain how to clean the area, when to use medications, when to return to normal activities, and what symptoms should be reported.
